The IRS and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue have extended the due date for filing 2020 individual income tax returns from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021. Because the extension is automatic, no extension application need be filed.
Unlike last year, the IRS and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue have not extended the due date for making first quarter 2021 estimated tax payments, which are still due April 15, 2021.
An income tax extension normally extends the due date of a federal gift tax return. However, the IRS’ announcement was silent on this point. The IRS is expected to issue formal guidance in the coming days addressing the deadline for gift tax return and payment deadline extensions.
